Inactive License
A physician who wishes to retain a license while not actively practicing medicine in the State of California may apply for an inactive license.
A physician requesting inactive status need not comply with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
A physician who holds an inactive license may not practice medicine in California.
Inactivating a license does not change the expiration date, and the renewal fee is the same as the fee for an active license.
To restore an inactive license to active status, the physician must complete the required CME for a single renewal period. At this time the completion of 50 hours of Category 1 CME meets this requirement.
