Licensing

The Board's Licensing Program protects consumers through proper licensing of physicians and surgeons and certain allied health care professionals.

Inactive License Renewal

If you are not practicing medicine in California, you may renew your license under an Inactive status ( Business and Professions Code sections 700–704). You will still be required to renew your license every two years. You will not be required to comply with the Continuing Medical Education requirements.

Note: You may not engage in the practice of medicine while on Inactive status.

How to Renew an Inactive License

If you are not actively practicing medicine in the State of California, you may renew your license on an inactive status (Business and Professions Code section 700) by mail or online using BreEZe Online Services.

Renew Online

You are eligible to renew your license online if your license expires within the next 180 days OR your license expired less than five years ago.

You may, answer all the renewal questions and pay the renewal fee online using BreEZe Online Services. The renewal questions includes:

  • Physician Survey
  • Financial Interest Statement
  • Disciplinary Action/Conviction Disclosure

Renew by Mail

Once you receive the paper Renewal Notice in the mail, you may submit the Renewal Notice and fees directly to the Board by mailing the documents to:

Please make check or money order payable to the Medical Board of California.

The renewal notice includes:

  • Physician Survey
  • Financial Interest Statement
  • Disciplinary Action/Conviction Disclosure

Note: Please allow four to six weeks for processing.
